Jordan & Petra

Known mainly for the Rose City, Jordan has so many hidden delights to discover. With incredible food, wonderful hospitality and so much history, this country should be next on your list.

Here are some of our top tips for visiting:

1) Book onto a group tour, or organise a private driver. This country is vast, with a lot of travel time. Take the pressure off of yourselves, book a local expert. This way you will also get insider tips and tricks on how to best experience Jordan.

2) Take your walking shoes! If you plan to visit Petra and really want to get the full experience you are likely to be doing in excess of 15,000 steps in the day. We visited once during the day and went back again to see the main Rose City at night time. This is not to be missed, but also involves a lot of walking!

3) Go the extra mile. When in Petra the famous Rose City is the first incredible historic architecture you will come across. After you have spent some time here, follow the crowds through more narrow walkways to the Big city. There is a lovely coffee shop to rest before you return and it feels like an extra treat.

4) Have drinks in the Cave Bars on the outskirts of Petra. As Jordan is mostly a dry country, alcohol is hard to come by. However, in the cave bars they serve a great selection of drinks, have wonderful local music and the atmosphere is really relaxing and romantic, just what you need after a full day of walking.

5) Warm clothes are a must. Although the temperatures can reach the early 30’s in the daytime, it drops really quickly in the evenings. Especially when stargazing in Wadi Rum! Although blankets and warm drinks are provided, layer yourself up to make the experience more enjoyable.

6) Do your research on some star constellations. When sitting on the outdoor sofa, by the roaring fire after a home cooked dinner, it would be really handy to know what you are staring up at!

7) Take your time. We did this trip in just 6 days. I would recommend at least a week to be able to enjoy each place and have a little down time too. As there are a lot of walking and driving, it is nice to have some time with absolutely no plans in between the busy days.

8) An afternoon tour of Jarash is a must. Something we knew little about before arriving but was part of our pre-set plans. With your local guide collecting the tickets for you, this is a nice way to round off the trip.

9) Jordan Pass – This is an absolute necessity. This gives you access to all of the main attractions for the up-front cost of 100USD – it also waivers the visa cost (which would normally be 50USD) and makes the whole journey that bit smoother.

10) November is a great month to Travel. With the temperature around 25-30C, you really get to enjoy the sunshine and it’s not too hot for the activities!
