History

Mikael & Ann Krafft founded Star Clippers in 1989, followed closely by the launch of their first two ships Star Clipper & Star Flyer in 1991 and 1992. The Swedish owned business is still very much a family affair today and is run from the companies head office in Monaco by Mikael and Ann, alongside their children.

Mikael grew up on sailing yachts; a big part of the local culture in Stockholm, and from a young age engaged his passion for the sea. He was fortunate enough to spend his holidays as a child, and then an adult on sailing ships, and was determined to share his love of sailing with the world. With the cost of a private charter being way out of reach for the majority of people, the idea of a ‘sailing – cruise’ experience was born, enabling guests to purchase a cabin for a week’s adventure of a lifetime. Star Clippers is extremely proud of its rich sailing heritage and to still be a family owned business today is quite some feat. It’s all in the finer details on Star Clippers, with the Krafft’s personalities shining through. Many of our guests have been fortunate enough to meet with the owners when sailing, as they are often on board themselves, and are renowned for their open and friendly approach – you feel like a member of the family from the moment you step on board!
