Guatemala

Volcano hikes, beautiful lakes, ancient Mayan ruins, wonderful people and amazing wildlife, Guatemala has it all!

Get straight out of the capital and head to Antigua. The old city is stunning from every angle, with cobbled streets, colourful colonial buildings, a backdrop of volcanoes and an amazing selection of places to eat, drink and shop – this place is a favourite!

Climb Acantanango Volcano. Recommended as a two-day hike and is moderate to hard level. Achievable for people of all ages, it’s well worth the effort for the sunrise at the summit!

Volcan Fuego – if you chose to do the extra hike to Fuego from Acatenango, it is one of the few places in the world where you can stand on an active volcano and watch the eruptions at night. However difficulty very hard!

Visit Aqua Antigua for a bit of R&R after your hiking day. With a gorgeous pool, a wonderful hot tub, a roof terrace where you can see the whole city and on a clear day all the surrounding volcanoes, a sports lounge and a wine cellar you could spend hours here!

A trip to the Saturday markets in Antigua must be enjoyed, even just for the people watching… and maybe a bargain or two!

Visit the free museums in Antigua including the Museo de Art.

Head to Lake Atitlan for a few nights on the water. A beautiful setting with many small towns situated around the lake. San Pedro has the best of both worlds with a great selection of bars, restaurants and shops but isn’t as busy as the main towns. You can hop on a boat for £1 to the other towns the enjoy them too!

Go paragaliding if you’re the adventurous type! Lake Atitlan is meant to be one of the most scenic flights you can do. Seeing the beautiful lake, surrounded by volcanoes from above is just breathtaking!

Head inland to Lanquin, a small town in a jungle valley where the scenery is simply incredible. Spend the day sunbathing in a lovely hotel or enjoy a day trip to visit Semuc Champey – the picturesque natural pools!

Visit the Ancient Mayan ruins at Tikal, we recommend you stay in El Remate and book a shared shuttle to Tikal National Park. Spend the day wondering around temples dating back to 900AD spotting wildlife on the way through.
