1. Where to stay? Puerto del Carmen is a good base for staying in Lanzarote. It is a great place for families and couples as its full of different restaurants and clubs. If you don’t know where to stay in Lanzarote, I can recommend my choice: I stayed in a new complex of apartments, with its own swimming pool which offers fun for children as well as adults. The Hotel THB Flora is a wonderful place for families.
2. Tipping- It’s expected to tip the waiting staff after a meal, for good service it is usually expected to tip about 10% of your total meal. If you just pop in for a drink, it’s normal to leave a very small amount of change and the same applies to taxi drivers, just round up and tell them to keep the rest. Tourists occasionally tip the fuel pump attendants, but it’s not essential.
3. Excursions- There are dozens of things you can do on the island, ranging from diving in a Submarine, racing Go Karts, buggy tours, private boat tours, surf lessons and wine tasting. However, there are just as many eye-catching excursions such as day trips to visit the volcanoes and caves, even boat trips to its twin country Fuerteventura!
4. Shopping- The resorts are surrounded by small supermarkets that carry a big range of products, including British or Irish items. Some have meat counters, and they all sell alcohol and cigarettes; however, you do pay a premium at those shops. If you travel a little further out of resort to a large supermarket in Playa Honda or Arrecife, you will save money. They have Mercadona, Lidl and Euro spar in those areas.
5. Transport- Airport transfers into resort can be arranged in advance in the form or shuttle buses or private cars. There will be taxis at the airport which can work well for Costa Teguise or Puerto Del Carmen but may be more expensive as you get further towards Play Blanca. There is a public bus service on the island which is inexpensive and it’s easy to arrange car hire with collection and drop off at the airport.
6. Catamaran cruises are definitely worth considering while in Lanzarote. Papagayo beaches are highly loved by everyone who visits but visiting them usually means hiring a car and finding your own way through the rocky roads. This cruise experience takes you there and back via catamaran, watching the sea life below and providing you with snorkel and kayak opportunities to enjoy time off the boat once you arrive. Plus, you get unlimited drinks and lunch on board!
7. Experience scuba diving to the fullest for the first time on a 2-hour excursion supervised with a SSI instructor at all times, practice basic scuba diving techniques in shallow waters before heading off to explore one of the beautiful bays. Discover the magnificent marine life Lanzarote has to offer in its crystal-clear waters, during the dive you can see parrotfish, damselfish and more. If you’re looking for a longer dive, there are many options available!

9. Visit Fuerteventura! A great way to do this is to visit the Fuerteventura Dunes in Corralejo, the ferry ride between the two islands is just 30 minutes. To start with, you will visit El Cotillo, a gorgeous fishing village where you can go to the beach, stroll along the white sand or relax with a drink on one of its terraces. Later you will head to Corralejo where you’ll have free time to go shopping, stroll through the streets or eat fresh fish in one of the restaurants. Finally, you will head to the Natural Park of the Dunes, don’t forget your camera, you will be able to take some great pictures to remember! Afterwards, you will have free time to swim and sunbathe on the crystal-clear beaches that surround the park, without a doubt one of the best beaches in the Canary Islands.
10. It can get very warm and humid in the summer, with temperatures as high as 29°C in Aug-Oct . The best time to visit Lanzarote is in spring or autumn for slightly cooler weather. March marks the end of winter and the region enjoys an average temperature of 23°C. Lanzarote’s location near West Africa and the Sahara Desert means it’s easy for the region to overheat. However, remember to wear plenty of high factor sun protection on your holiday as a sea breeze can make it easy to misjudge the temperature of the sun.
