Norway

Western Norway has some of the longest, deepest, narrowest and most beautiful fjords in the world.  Taking a trip here really does ensure that you have breath-taking views around every corner. UNESCO has included the fjords of Fjord Norway, validated by the likes of Geirangerfjord and the Nærøyfjord, on its prestigious World Heritage List.  The fjords are often described as “nature’s own work of art”, created when the glaciers retreated and sea water flooded the U-shaped valleys.  A cruise really is the best way to see this stunning part of the world, but be sure to ensure you visit the best ports of call.  The Norwegian fjords enjoy a mild climate and remain virtually ice-free. If you are lucky you will see wildlife such as seals, porpoises and different fish as they swim in the fjords, whilst eagles and other birds can be seen in the skies above.

  1. Flam is one of the ports of call not too be missed. Take a ride on the Flåm railway, it really is one of Norway’s unmissable highlights. The journey takes 50 minutes and takes you up to the high mountains at Myrdal station. The journey takes in some spectacular scenery.  Another tip here is to purchase your tickets in advance on line, and not from the ship as a shore excursion, as this will be so much cheaper and you will get the same experience.
  2. Geirgangerfjord is another MUST as a port of call. The whole area surrounding this tiny village is spectacular it truly is picture perfect.  When visiting Geiranger you can expect dramatic fjord landscape, beautiful nature and cultural experiences.  The ‘Seven Sisters waterfall” is no less than seven waterfalls that all descend into the fjord. They have an average fall of around 250 meters and are an impressive sight when the water levels are high.
  3. Bergen is a super town, again no need for an excursion here, simply enjoy walking around the town with its quirky coloured shops and cafes. Try and visit the Fish Market .. quite something and a colourful delight
  4. The Fjords is the perfect place for kayaking. Enjoy the stillness and the beauty of the rivers and lakes. With stunning coastal areas, here you will find some of the best rivers for river kayaking, the region offers adventures for paddlers at all levels.
  5. If you like walking, take a guided hike, there are literally thousands of scenic hikes to choose from in the regions
  6. Immerse yourself in the Viking history
  7. Take a cookery lesson
  8. Visit a glacier – Due to heavy snowfall and altitudes up to 1800 meter above sea level, 11 of the 20 large glaciers in Norway are in Fjord Norway.
  9. Did you know Fjord Norway is perhaps best known for its beautiful cultural gems and great experience!  Nature has influenced the culture and art in Fjord Norway. We can thank nature for the fantastic landscape paintings and magnificent music, and exciting cultural experiences are still being created here; not only in the cities, but also in smaller creative communities.
  10. Visit a Stave church, they are considered to be among the most important examples of wooden Medieval architecture in Europe. In the Middle Ages, there were probably more than 1,000 stave churches in Norway. Today, only 28 remain, including Urnes stave church, which is included on UNESCO’s World Heritage List
